STAINLESS STEEL

For it's chemical composition, stainless steel has increased resistance on corrosion. Despite that, depending on composition and environment in which is settled (e.g. coastal area or atmosphere consisting trails of free iron or chlorine), steel has different ways of reaction to corrosion, which can lead to intercrystal, cranny (crack) or other type of corrosion. To avoid or minimize corrosion of stainless steel material, the process of chemical washing and passivating is conducted. This process removes free iron form the surface of material (which is the main reason of corrosion of steel), other impurities and discoloration (different iron oxidants) and remains of welding which enables creation of protective (passive) film of chromium oxide which protects stainless steel from corrosion.
